People with mental illness will no longer be on the streets of New York

New York authorities are launching a program to “remove people with severe mental illnesses from the streets.” “There is a belief that we cannot forcibly send a person for treatment until he has caused violence. It is a myth. And it must be dispelled. We have a moral obligation to the citizens to prevent the crisis that we see around us,” said Eric Adams.

The New York City mayor's office has launched a program to train police officers, paramedics and other emergency services to deal with such people. Adams also noted that often, even if a person with mental illness is admitted to the hospital, he is quickly released after his condition has stabilized. Now New York authorities will encourage keeping such patients in hospitals. The city will have new hospital beds for people with mental illness. “We will find a bed for everyone,” Adams promised.
