Classic to choose from

To cleanse the soul and gain hope - there is nothing better than classical music for this. And there is no better place in the world for classical music than New York, especially in the coming days. Here are just two programs, each of which promises unforgettable impressions and experiences.

The Cleveland Symphony Orchestra will appear at Carnegie Hall on January 18th. The best in America in terms of its sound (next to it can only be Chicago), it has been working for more than twenty years under the direction of the Austrian Franz Welser-Möst, and therefore listening to the music of the great Viennese in his interpretation - and this is exactly what will happen on January 18 - is almost like visiting concert of the famous Vienna Philharmonic. The emphasis will be on the music of Schubert: the Unfinished Symphony and Mass No. 6, the last monumental work of the composer, who died at 31, before it and many of his other masterpieces became known to the public. But before the sublime, tragic and purifying music of the 19th century, there will be a suite from the music of Alban Berg’s opera “Lulu” - tragedy, grotesque and farce of the 20th century.

On January 20 and 21 in the evening and January 22 in the afternoon, music lovers will flock to the David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center, where the New York Philharmonic Orchestra performs. Recently, in this renovated hall, which has become more beautiful both externally and acoustically, the orchestra has been playing with different conductors: a search is underway for a replacement for Jaapp van Zweeden, who is leaving the post of chief conductor.

This time, Dalia Stasevska will be at the helm, young but already famous in the world, not only for her performances with the best orchestras in the world - from London to Chicago and Montreal, but also for her tireless assistance to Ukraine. The daughter of a Ukrainian artist, she was born in Estonia, and grew up and studied in Finland, but from childhood, thanks to her father and grandmother, she knew the Ukrainian language and Ukrainian culture. In music, however, for Dali, the main composer is Jean Sibelius, whose Second Symphony is included in the current program, along with Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto (soloist is the brilliant Georgian-German violinist Lisa Batiashvili) and a new piece by the Chinese woman Wang Lu living in America.
