US launches private refugee sponsorship program
On Thursday, the Biden administration will announce a program called Welcome Corps that will allow Americans to formally sponsor refugee resettlement. To sponsor a group of at least 5 people, they must provide $2275 per refugee, pass a background check, and provide a plan for exactly how they will help.
At the initial stage of the program, State Department officials will select sponsors for refugees who are already allowed to be in the United States. A similar system has been operating in Canada for quite some time.
