New York lawmakers want to bring back tips on DoorDash and UberEats apps

New York City Councilman Sean Abreu has introduced a bill that would require food delivery apps like DoorDash and UberEats to prominently display a box on their checkout forms asking people to tip the delivery driver. In this case, the default tip will be set at 10%.

As a reminder, the DoorDash and UberEats apps have removed the ability to leave tips until the customer receives their order. This all happened after the city legislated an increase in the hourly wage of food couriers from $7,09 to $17,96. DoorDash said the city's intervention has already led to "sharply rising costs for customers and a drop in orders at local restaurants in all 5 boroughs." Uber said that tipping should be a “reward” for excellent service not before, but after the service is provided.
