In a powerful and symbolic gathering at the Clinton Global Initiative, Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, Yulia Navalnaya, and Hillary Clinton took the stage together, delivering a bold message during the UN High-Level Week in the United States. The three prominent women stood united in their call for strengthening democratic values at a time when global freedom faces increasing threats from authoritarian regimes.
Tikhanovskaya, a key opposition figure against Belarus’ dictatorship, emphasized the danger posed to democracy when tyranny triumphs in any country. She painted a sobering picture of the current geopolitical landscape, describing it as turbulent and fraught with complex challenges. "When dictatorship wins in one country, it becomes a threat to democracy everywhere," she remarked, urging the international community to recognize the universal nature of this struggle.
The opposition leader stressed that democracy is not a given, reminding the audience that while Americans are preparing for elections, citizens in autocratic regimes know their leaders in advance—usually dictators who imprison their challengers. Her words struck a chord as she drew a stark contrast between the unpredictability of free elections and the grim certainty of oppressive rule.
Yulia Navalnaya, wife of imprisoned Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, echoed Tikhanovskaya’s sentiment, highlighting the brutal reality for those daring to confront despots. She called for solidarity with the people risking their lives for dignity, justice, and the rule of law, insisting that the democratic world has a responsibility to support those fighting for these values.
Hillary Clinton, former U.S. Secretary of State, reinforced the urgent need for democracies to stand strong against the rising tide of authoritarianism. She pointed to the dangerous erosion of democratic institutions globally and encouraged using every available tool to assist nations battling against oppressive forces.
Tikhanovskaya made a poignant plea to the audience: "What do nations fighting against dictatorships for human dignity and justice need from the democratic world? We need you to be strong, consistent, and to use all the tools at your disposal to help those in need."
