Twitter users just voted for Elon Musk to resign as head of the company.

Before the vote was tabulated, Musk said he would support the result. On Sunday, Musk tweeted a poll asking whether he should step down as head of the company. The results showed that 17,5 million people voted, with 57,5% - about 10 million - in favor of his resignation.

Shortly after the survey closed, Tesla shares rose nearly 5% in premarket trading. Musk is the CEO of Tesla, and some shareholders of the electric car maker are concerned about how much energy he spends on Twitter.

He followed up the post with further tweets saying, "As the saying goes, be careful what you wish for because you just might get it" and "Those who want power are the ones who least deserve it."

Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao was among several people calling on Musk to stay on Twitter. "Stay the course." Robert F. Kennedy Jr. also told Musk not to resign.

YouTuber MrBeast said he was in favor of Musk leaving his leadership position.

Musk has used the mantra “vox populi, vox dei,” which translates from Latin as “voice of the people, voice of God,” to justify some of his controversial actions.

But Musk hasn't acted on all of his survey results. Critics used the phrase "vox populi" to ridicule him and accuse him of hypocrisy after he defied the results of a poll in which Twitter users voted for Musk to reinstate accounts that he said "claimed my exact location" in real time".

Accounts including @ElonJet, which posted public information about the location of Musk's private jet, and the personal account of its owner, Jack Sweeney, remain suspended from the site.

Musk's actions at the helm of the social media platform have sparked controversy, with some people praising him for promising to promote free speech and change Twitter's content moderation policies. Others cited concerns about a rise in hate speech on the site and questioned Musk's hypocrisy in suspending some journalists.

Advertisers abandoned the site over concerns about content moderation, and Musk appeared to introduce new rules on a whim, some of which he later rescinded. He also radically changed Twitter's workforce, with thousands of employees resigning, being laid off or being fired.
