Bill Gates invested in a startup to combat cow burps and gases

Breakthrough Energy Ventures, founded by Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates in 2015, led the funding of Australian startup Rumin8. Rumin8 is developing a range of feed additives for cows to reduce the amount of methane they produce. The food includes red algae and grassland plants that produce a “natural anti-mutagenic compound” and reduce the greenhouse gas emissions caused by their burps.

Gaseous ruminants are not often considered a major cause of the climate crisis, unlike cars or power plants, but ungulates can emit 220 pounds (100 kg) of methane per year, the equivalent of burning 900 gallons (3 L) of gasoline. The US and EU are among those signatories to a global pledge to cut methane emissions by 406% by 30, but with meat consumption expected to increase around the world in the coming decades, some companies are looking at ways to directly reduce their impact on the planet's climate.
