Arizona authorities: "Cartels control the southern border of the United States"
Officials in the border city of Yuma, Arizona, said the southern U.S. border is effectively controlled by Mexican cartels.
According to Yuma County Commissioner Jonathan Lines, the cartels have established a business at the border: migrants pay them to get into the United States. And if a migrant does not have money, he can start working for the cartel, transporting and selling drugs.
From 2021 to 2022, migrant border crossings in the Yuma sector increased by 171%. At the same time, the number of terrorist arrests has also increased: in 2022, there were about 100. For comparison, over the previous 5 years, a total of 26 arrests were made.
Cartel profits have grown from $500 million in 2018 to about $13 billion in 2022, according to Homeland Security Investigations.
