Details have emerged of the story of two Russians who escaped mobilization by sailing to the USA

Maxim and Sergei did not want to fight when Vladimir Putin announced mobilization. The men had a crazy idea to swim to Alaska - and thus escape the draft. They sailed about 300 miles (more than 480 km) along the Russian coast, and then went out to the open sea. The men landed on St. Lawrence Island and, with the help of an interpreter, wrote to the locals: “We don’t want war, we want political asylum.” To the surprise of Sergei and Maxim, they were “not shot,” but taken to Tacoma (Washington): they spent three months in an immigration prison.

The men were eventually released. They have applied for asylum, are learning English and are planning to start a business. Their future is still uncertain - consideration of the application may take about a year.
