US outlets are the hidden enemies of immigrants

If you are going to move to the USA, it is better to leave your chargers and other electronics, saving space in your suitcase and nerves. The US uses 120-volt, 60-hertz outlets, which may differ from standards in other countries. In Russia, for example, sockets have a voltage of 220 volts and a frequency of 50 hertz, and the socket and plug themselves have different shapes.

If you don't want to part with your electronics, you can buy outlet adapters that allow you to connect your devices to a standard US outlet. This will help if the device operates at a voltage of 100-240 volts, a phone charger, for example. But for a hairdryer, an adapter will not be enough; you will have to buy a voltage transformer that converts the voltage supplied by a standard US outlet to the level required for electrical devices.
