New reality: record egg prices provoked a wave of smuggling
With eggs costing upwards of $8 a dozen in some cities, this staple has gone underground and is now being smuggled across the US-Mexico border on the cheap. For comparison: in Mexico, eggs cost only $12 for 3 pieces.
Over the past 4 months, the number of eggs confiscated at customs has increased by 108%. This situation was created due to inflation and a shortage of chickens, many of which became victims of bird flu that swept through US poultry farms.
