Singer Anna Netrebko sued the Metropolitan Opera for $200 thousand for canceling her concerts

A court in the United States ordered the New York Metropolitan Opera to pay Russian opera singer Anna Netrebko 200 thousand dollars (more than 15 million rubles) as compensation for performances canceled after the start of the war in Ukraine. This was reported by The New York Times with reference to the arbitration court decision. As the court ruled, Netrebko must be compensated for 13 performances, because the contract with her implied payment, even if the performer did not participate in the concert.

In turn, representatives of the opera asked to completely dismiss Netrebko’s claim, since she did not comply with their demand to publicly condemn President Vladimir Putin for the invasion of Ukraine, thereby violating the terms of the agreement. However, the court decided that she had the right to do so. At the same time, Netrebko demanded another 400 thousand dollars from the opera for upcoming performances, which were not officially agreed upon. The court denied her this. At the same time, the judge fined the singer $30 for “extremely inappropriate statements” against her Western critics. At the end of March, Netrebko published a post on Facebook in which she “categorically condemned the war against Ukraine.” She also stated that she is not related to any Russian leader and has only met Putin a few times in her life.
