The House of Representatives failed to elect a speaker

For the first time in 100 years, the House of Representatives went into recess without electing a speaker on the first day of the new convocation. None of the newly elected members of the House of Representatives took the oath; the de jure body of power does not function.

Republican Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy was unable to gather the necessary votes after three attempts to vote. The new Republicans have 222 seats, and 218 votes are needed to be elected speaker. 19 Republicans voted against McCarthy in the first two votes. On the third, another congressman joined them. All of them are members of the far-right House Freedom Caucus, five of them are newly elected Trumpists.

Alternatively, the rioters voted for the far-right, ultra-conservative Jim Jordan all three times. McCarthy does not intend to withdraw his candidacy. New voting will take place tomorrow. Trump refused to publicly endorse McCarthy.

In 1853, the House of Representatives took two months and 133 votes to elect a speaker.
