Biden Administration Seeks to Create New Charger Network Provision

This is one of the few requirements the Biden administration is putting forward for chargers, and today it is expected to issue a new requirement for electric vehicle chargers that receive federal funds. The requirement is expected to change Tesla's stance on chargers that only serve its vehicles. Tesla is expected to open up some of its chargers, making at least 7500 chargers available to all electric vehicles by the end of 2024.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg also said chargers purchased with federal money will need to be assembled in America. He said the administration will also encourage companies to make more charger parts in the United States. The Infrastructure Act allocated $7,5 billion for electric vehicle chargers.

Increasing the number of electric vehicles is a key part of the Biden administration's plan to combat climate change. Biden has set a goal of making half of new car sales electric by 2030.
