How to get help in the USA: housing, food and other programs for immigrants

There are a number of assistance programs in the United States that may be available to immigrants depending on their status and circumstances. They are primarily available to US citizens, asylees, refugees, Temporary Protected Status, green cards and others.

 

1.Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) - provides cash for food purchases. Each month, program participants receive a specified amount of money on an Electronic Nutritional Transfer (EBT) card that can be used to purchase groceries at participating stores.

2.Medicaid is a health care program that provides medical care to low-income individuals. 

3.Housing Choice Voucher Program - a program to provide rental assistance for low-income families. 

4.Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) is a program that provides financial assistance to low-income families. 

5.Job Corps is a program to help young people aged 16 to 24 years old obtain education and job training. The program provides participants with free education and training in various fields. Program participants have the opportunity to live on the territory of the training center and receive free food and medical care. The program also provides job search support and employment assistance.

6.Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) is a nutrition assistance program that provides monthly payments to purchase food for pregnant women, mothers, and young children.

7.English as a Second Language (ESL) is an educational program that provides the opportunity to learn English for immigrants.
