In the USA, doormen have a “lottery day”

Working as a doorman in the USA at some good hotel can be compared to Bitcoin mining, only instead of cryptocurrency you get real, crisp bills straight into your pocket. I advise you to just stand outside an expensive hotel one day and observe how many times in a short period of time the doorman will help hotel guests find a taxi, carry their luggage, or tell them where to go. I assure you that almost every client will leave him money. In general, they are like waiters: they work only for tips, but they do not want to become managers, since they know very well the American culture of leaving tips for any favor.

But becoming a doorman in a good place is not so easy. It’s probably like becoming a big boss in Russia - without connections and acquaintances it’s almost impossible. By the way, if a doorman works at a residential complex, then at Christmas from each apartment he receives an envelope with cash (like all other employees of the complex, everyone is given an envelope). Some may give $1000, some less, some may give more. They call it “lottery day”; in the evening, the happy ones count their harvest and plan where they will spend it.
