New immigrants from Texas arrive in New York

As is tradition, visitors from Texas were transported on three buses. Since April 2022, New York has received more than 31 thousand immigrants. City officials call them asylum seekers. They are delivered from Texas and Arizona, and immigrants get there from Mexico, writes NYT.

New Yorkers are placed in shelters and hotels. In the metropolis, according to the mayor’s office, 60 temporary shelters have already been opened. Mayor Eric Adams admitted that New York could not cope with such a flow of people, so he declared a state of emergency in the city in the hope of receiving additional funding from the state and federal governments. The city's shelter system is already overwhelmed as it waits for help. The situation could get worse with the repeal of the so-called Title 42 program on the border with Mexico, adopted under Trump. Due to quarantine, pedestrian access to the border was closed. It may open on December 21. Then, for example, thousands of immigrants from Texas will come to New York every week.

According to New York City Controller Brad Lander, the metropolis will be forced to spend $1 billion a year on the influx of immigrants, including $600 million for immigrants and the homeless and another $400 for “emergency humanitarian response.” In the meantime, the mayor of New York is not making loud statements. Waiting for a response from the federal government and accepting new visitors, after all, New York is a city of refuge.
