    NEW YORK

One of the strangest museums in New York is The Earth Room

In the prestigious Soho district, among expensive shops and boutiques, almost the entire second floor of the building occupies 191 cubic meters of land, laid out in a neat layer of about 60 cm with an area of 335 square meters. To put it simply, the entire floor is littered with 127 tons of earth. A visit to the Earthen Room can be compared to a cold shower: from the noisy center of the metropolis you find yourself in a room that has not changed since 1977. Silence, the damp smell of earth, nothing has happened for many many years, as if the room was stuck in time. The author of the work is Walter De Maria (1935 – 2013), a New Yorker known for his conceptual art and land art, which I will definitely write more about at the end of this thread. The Earth Room supports the Dia Art Foundation, one of the most progressive and cool art organizations of our time.

I can’t help but tell you that the only caretaker of this gallery and the person who lets you in through the intercom is the artist Bill Dilworth, who has remained faithful to his mission for 24 years. He also marks each visitor with incredible beauty with squiggles, and also moisturizes the soil once a week and fights fungus and mold. I forgot to say that visiting the Earthen Room costs nothing, admission is free, but the room is not open in the summer.
