The best zoos and aquariums in New York

Did you ever think you'd see a seal in Manhattan or a giraffe in the Bronx? The New York Zoo and New York Aquarium offer opportunities to get up close and personal with animals from around the world. Whether your kids are big or small, there is a zoo in New York City to suit their age, interests, and attention span. The most important thing is that you don’t have to break the bank to visit these creatures. Be sure to go to each zoo's website when planning your visit.

1.Bronx zoo

The largest of the city's zoos, the Bronx Zoo covers more than 250 acres and has 750 species of animals - it's impossible to see it all in one day. Animal habitats are organized by geography and species, so you'll find lions in the African plains, gorillas in the Congo Gorilla Forest, and leopards in the Himalayan highlands. There are also giraffes, monkeys, bears and tigers - just to name a few of the child-loving animal species you'll find. The petting zoo offers a quieter, more tactile experience for those looking for a more hands-on visit, with little ones able to interact with donkeys, sheep and goats. In addition to the animals, the zoo features a revamped dinosaur safari, a bug-themed carousel, and an epic Nature Trek that offers families a bird's-eye view of the zoo. General ticket prices are $31,95 for children ages 3 to 12 and $41,95 for ages 13 and older. Children ages 2 and under are admitted free.

2.Prospect Park Zoo

While you won't find the most exotic animals here, there are plenty of fun things to do for kids in this New York City gem. The Discovery Trail is a winding, shaded path that passes through a variety of animal habitats and includes interactive games for children, such as spider web climbing. Red pandas, a duck pond and an aviary are just some of the amazing attractions you'll encounter. The barn and garden have animals to feed and interact with, and the sea lion show is not to be missed. Admission is less than $10 and free for children under 2 years old.

3.Staten Island Zoo

Not only does the island have great beaches and hiking trails, but it also has a fantastic zoo that alone is worth the trip across the harbour. It is home to 300 species of animals, including kangaroos, leopards and an impressive variety of birds of prey. The zoo hosts a variety of events throughout the year in addition to an extensive list of activities for children. Admission to the zoo is inexpensive, and families can visit for free on Wednesdays after 14 p.m.

4.Queens zoo

This zoo is smaller in size and focuses on North American animals. There are bison, bears, moose and cougars. Like other zoos, there are sea lions that perform for visitors throughout the day. For children there is a zoo with animal food that can be purchased on site.

5. Central Park Zoo

This New York City zoo offers a crash course in climate—kids can see everything from snow leopards and snow monkeys to grizzly bears and poison dart frogs. Follow a winding path through a quaint forest where children can feed and interact with the animals. Be sure to stop by George Delacorte's musical clock and watch hippos, goats and bears serenade you with nursery rhymes every 30 minutes.

6. New york aquarium

The shark exhibit at the New York Aquarium is probably the most popular among visitors, and for good reason. In addition to sharks, you will see tons of fish, playful otters and very lively sea lions that will compete for your attention. Although some attractions are indoors, be mindful of the weather as many animals live outside.
