US authorities are going to use expedited screening for immigrants who seek asylum

The Biden administration will begin launching a pilot program next week that will quickly screen migrants seeking asylum in the United States, Reuters reports. We are talking about those who tried to illegally cross the southern border of the United States. According to the Department of Homeland Security, expedited checks are part of the Title 42 repeal program. Let me remind you that this rule was introduced by Donald Trump in March 2020 due to the pandemic, thereby limiting the influx of more than 2 million immigrants. Expedited screenings will primarily involve telephone interviews. In addition, immigrants can benefit from the assistance of lawyers when speaking with US government officials. By the way, Trump also used rapid checks for asylum. But back then, the interviews were conducted by Customs and Border Protection agents and with no guarantee of legal assistance. The DHS notes that the experiment with faster asylum screenings will “serve as a basis for best practices” in the future.
