Free tax preparation services for immigrants

Eligible New York City residents can file their taxes for free at the City-funded New York City Free Tax Prep Help Center. Eligibility for this filing depends on your income and parental status. If you meet the criteria, you will be able to meet privately with a certified Internal Revenue Service (IRS) volunteer who can help you complete or amend your tax return, including last year's tax returns, and apply for an individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN).

An ITIN is a tax processing number assigned to foreign citizens and others who need to file or report federal taxes but are not eligible to receive a Social Security number. The IRS maintains strong privacy practices to ensure that income and tax information filed by immigrants is not compromised. In general, the IRS is prohibited from disclosing taxpayer information, including to other federal agencies.

For more information and to find your nearest organization, visit nyc.gov/taxprep or call 311 and say the phrase “tax preparation assistance”
