Best City for an Immigrant in the USA

After moving to America, many people wonder what city to choose to live in? Most immigrants, unless they have relatives or friends in other states, go to Los Angeles, New York, Miami and Chicago. Moreover, according to my personal assessment, about 40% go to California. Everyone is attracted by the climate and rich nature of California, shown in many Hollywood films.

  • Los Angeles

The weather is ideal, warm and sunny all year round - it is very important that in LA it is not as stuffy as in Miami, and you feel comfortable in the summer. Life is quieter in Los Angeles; people live at a slower pace compared to New York; love sports and healthy food. It's cheaper to live here. This is especially true for housing. In LA, for $3000 you can rent a 2-bedroom apartment in a new house with a gym, a swimming pool and a garden with palm trees in a safe area. You won’t find this in New York, and besides, the big problem in New York is cockroaches and rats that run like cats through the streets of the village. As in most of America, in LA you definitely need a car to get around; without it, you will spend 1,5-2 hours getting to work or shops, since public transport is not developed, and the subway is a kind of shelter for mentally ill homeless people. And yes, by the way, there are a lot of them in LA, much more than in NY. There is an entire area in LA where homeless people have set up a tent city - Skid Row, and it is located in the city center, next to Downtown.

Los Angeles is a city that everyone has seen in the movies. The beautiful nature of California, which everyone knows from famous Hollywood films. If a warm climate, ocean, cool nature and a healthy lifestyle are important to you, LA is the perfect place.

We heard a rumor that homeless people from New York are given a small amount of money and put on a bus to Los Angeles, thus reducing their number in one city and relocating them to another. We can’t say anything about the reliability; we haven’t found any information anywhere.

  • New York

Well-developed public transport. Cover the entire city with a network of metro and bus routes - we wrote about this here. Getting around the city is really convenient and fast, although the metro is very old and very dirty in places - by the way, we also made a video about this. A sense of the grandeur of the city, because New York is a city of skyscrapers, and walking around you feel the full power of the US economy. Historical buildings are organically combined with new houses made of glass and metal, which creates its own unique architectural style.

NY has a fast pace of life. It's hard to live slowly here. You are constantly going somewhere and solving 10 things on the go, but this is normal for such a big city. The climate is quite good, there is a change of seasons - which is important for us. But winter is not as cold as in St. Petersburg. This year there was no snow at all, and no cold weather in general. Almost always the temperature is above zero Celsius.

New York City has a garbage problem; many areas have trash on the streets, even in Manhattan.

As for me, New York is more convenient for an immigrant because there is no need to buy a car. There is a huge Russian-speaking community here, through which you can always find housing and work if your English is bad. And people who love a warm climate, a healthy lifestyle and work in the IT or media sector come to Los Angeles.

  • Miami

Also, many people go to Miami because of the warm climate, but unlike LA, Miami is stuffy. The humidity is much higher, so it’s difficult to live in the summer, especially without air conditioning... It seemed to me that many Russian-speaking businessmen prefer to live in Miami. In recent years, especially since the pandemic, many New Yorkers have moved to Miami, so the city is gaining momentum. But for me personally, Miami is a resort city, ideal for a temporary vacation.

  • Chicago

This is the third most populous city in America with a huge number of skyscrapers, the architecture is reminiscent of New York, but much colder and with cheaper rent.
