More than 200 thousand Americans became sponsors under the Uniting for Ukraine program
The most hospitable US cities that are ready to shelter refugees from Ukraine are Seattle, Sacramento and Chicago, but New York has the most sponsors. In total, about a quarter of a million Ukrainians entered the United States. Of these, about 117 thousand did so under the Uniting for Ukraine program launched in April 2022, which provides asylum for a period of two years if any US citizen is willing to sponsor refugees. In total, more than 200 thousand Americans expressed a desire to become sponsors.
About 150 thousand more Ukrainians entered the United States under the standard asylum program, or crossed the border in various ways, including crossing the border between Mexico and the United States at great risk.
Also, from October to December 2022, about 12,5 thousand Russians legally crossed the US border with Mexico (a year earlier there were only 5 thousand), and approximately 4700 more Russian citizens tried to enter the US illegally (a year ago there were only 415 such cases).
