Contemporary art: cheese with hair for 500 thousand dollars

I was incredibly tired - I trampled through two contemporary art fairs in Los Angeles at once. The fat Frieze, where works worth up to 10 million dollars were brought, and the more modest Felix with new names and a price tag of up to half a million dollars. For the sake of these events, glamorous Angelenos, who leave their homes four times a year for the Grammys, Emmys, Oscars and Golden Globes, came out to people: some to enrich themselves spiritually, some to snatch a picture, some just to hang out. And someone came to see what his millions were spent on - since the best works had already been sold out through online catalogs a month ago. Some cried with happiness, and some with disappointment; everything looks predictably better in the photo. The gallery owners and art dealers were in a great mood—they sold everything they could imagine. Leonardo DiCaprio was spotted at Jeffrey Deitch's gallery, watching for an hour as artificial intelligence breaks multi-colored corals into millions of particles. This is an installation by the sharply fashionable artist Refik Anadol.

This year we were left with nothing - the works we liked were sold out. It is impossible for Russians to purchase anything and bring it home due to the imposed sanctions. But I thought, why should our collectors be upset? Take my ideas for a pencil. Don’t throw away the cheese, cut some hair off your lover’s back, and a masterpiece worth half a million dollars will live in your home. Don’t rush to send an old handbag as a gift to poor relatives - spray paint it, put in it something you don’t mind and that evokes nostalgia - Chanel perfume, Coca-Cola and whatever else is banned. Save the eggshells so that you can arrange them beautifully on a large table as an installation. Don't throw away disposable aluminum utensils and make a sculpture. If cooking is not your passion and the volume of containers for a sculpture of your loved one is not enough, then sculpt something smaller - start with your favorite organs - an arm, a leg, or whatever you like best.
