Illinois Catholic clergy sexually abused nearly 2 children
The Illinois Attorney General's Office found that from 1950 to 2019, 451 Catholic clergy sexually abused 1997 children. We're talking exclusively about Illinois. Prosecutor General Kwame Raoul said that many offenders will not be held accountable because the statute of limitations for the crime has expired. Due to childhood trauma, victims of abuse often contemplated suicide and also turned to drugs and alcohol. Some have been unable to overcome problems such as insomnia, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, depression, and so on for decades. The priests themselves read the report and stated that the number of victims and rapists was probably underestimated. The investigation has been ongoing since 2018.
