Some prisons prohibit the storage and transfer of books

The Marchall Project has released a cool project about books banned in American prisons.

In just 18 states for which information was obtained, prisons prohibit the possession and transfer of 54 thousand books. Of these, the largest number (about 20 thousand books) are prohibited in Florida prisons.

The lists mainly include books on martial arts, weapons handling, and works containing erotic and pornographic elements. But there are exceptions: Florida bans adult coloring books, textbooks on French and stock investing; in Texas - Alice Walker's novel "The Color Purple" about the life of an African-American woman in the South; in Michigan - books on the role-playing game Dungeons and Dragons.

For example, individual banned books in Texas (manga and nonconformist art of the USSR), Wisconsin (Game of Thrones and anarchist essays by Emma Goldman), South Carolina (Vogue, Cosmopolitan magazines and the Marvel encyclopedia), Montana (books on graffiti and guides on magic) and Georgia (the art of seduction and a vocabulary of programming).
