Scandal in Los Angeles prisons: officers accused of abuse of minor prisoners

Nearly 300 people have sued Los Angeles County over sexual abuse they suffered in juvenile detention between 1972 and 2018. Girls and boys were allegedly handcuffed and raped. Sometimes officers, according to alleged victims, did this not just in a cell or bathroom, but right in the middle of the corridor.

Some children were no more than 11 years old. Prison officials threatened them with even more violence if they dared to complain, possible victims claim. Despite repeated investigations, torture of children continues in Los Angeles prisons: for example, guards routinely spray pepper spray, thus raising juvenile delinquents, according to a recent report by the Corrections Oversight Commission.
