Diseases among older adults continue to rise in the United States
Doctors are sounding the alarm: over the past few years, the incidence of gonorrhea, syphilis and chlamydia among Americans over 55 has tripled, and in some states quadrupled. The District of Columbia consistently tops the rankings for the number of older adults with STDs. Next are New York, California and Alaska. Doctors attribute this trend to the growing popularity of dating apps, an increase in divorce rates, and easy access to Viagra.
The outbreak is both national and often local: sometimes dozens of pensioners in a nursing home encounter sexually transmitted infections.
