The South Carolina Supreme Court in the United States overturned a law banning abortion after a fetal heartbeat can be detected.

The Supreme Court declared the previous law, which prevented abortion after 6 weeks, was an “unreasonable restriction on a woman’s right to privacy” and unconstitutional. The decision to repeal it comes nearly two years after the state passed a law known as the Fetal Heartbeat and Abortion Protection Act. Abortion is now legal in the state until the 20th week.

The "Heartbeat Act" was passed in South Carolina in 2021. Almost immediately after its passage, it was blocked by a federal court, but a year later a federal judge allowed it to go into effect. A similar law was also passed in Texas in 2021, and then abortions were completely banned there.
