A new epidemic is spreading across the United States: valley fever is spreading beyond the southwest
The country may face a pandemic of another disease - coccidioidomycosis, or valley fever. The cause of the infection is the fungus Coccidioides, which is found primarily in the southwestern United States. However, doctors warn that the geography of the incidence is expanding due to climate change - in other regions of the country it is becoming warmer.
Symptoms of valley fever can often be confused with those of COVID-19: extreme fatigue, loss of taste and smell, headache. In general, the disease is well tolerated in most cases, but there are also complications - pneumonia, damage to bones and joints, inflammation of the heart. At risk are the elderly, patients with weakened immune systems, pregnant women, and diabetics.
