The IRS plans to launch its own software

The IRS plans to test its own direct tax software with a limited group of taxpayers by next tax season. The system was developed by the IRS and Digital Service, a technology consulting agency based in the White House. They tested the software extensively before opening a pilot test to a small portion of taxpayers in January.

The IRS is currently awaiting the release of a report on the viability of its direct file free tax preparation system proposal under the provisions of the Inflation Reduction Act, which requires such a report. The New America Think Tank was invited to conduct the research and write the report.
