Little Island: $260 million island park

Somehow, unbeknownst to myself, I’ve been living on the islands for six months. I can’t really call island life - traffic is on the left, food prices are the same as on the mainland, I can get to another island (Manhattan) across the island (Roosevelt Island) in 5 minutes by bike, although I live in Long Island City. However, this is the usual routine for most of those who live in NYC, so let's talk in more detail about the islands in the USA. We all know from our school days that Manhattan is a real island, but I don’t remember being told that the most populated areas of the city, Brooklyn and Queens, are also located on Long Island. At the same time, Long Island is the most populated island in the United States (8 million), and the United States is the fifth in the world in the number of islands (almost 19 thousand), second only to Norway, Sweden, Canada, and Finland. But let's return to New York, where 83% of the population lives on the islands. Only one area of the city - The Bronx - is on the mainland, and even then, this area has its own islands. In total, there are almost 40 islands in New York; I will try to highlight the five most unusual:

— The most famous small island of New York is Liberty Island, on which the Statue of Liberty is located;

— Rikers Island is a prison island with 10 correctional facilities;

— Swinburne Island is an artificial island that was created to quarantine immigrants;

— Roosevelt Island is an unusual place to live between Manhattan and Long Island City, but absolutely beautiful for tourists with beautiful views of the city itself. For example, it is from there that one of the best views of the UN building;

- Hog Island - a disappeared island that was once a resort town, was destroyed by a series of hurricanes at the end of the 20th century;

New Yorkers love islands so much that they even create special island parks; in the photo there is one of the coolest parks in the world, Little Island.
