What is gentrification?

Gentrification is the process of poor and crime-ridden areas being populated by active people with higher incomes. Thus, the average income level in the area increases and people are replaced by wealthier ones. This process is typical for many US cities. For example, this is how the Williamsburg area in New York, which 15-20 years ago was populated mainly by immigrants from Latin America, has been transformed. Now this area has been transformed, real estate here is very expensive, and vacant apartments for rent are dismantled in one day. This happened due to the large migration of the wealthy white population to the area. A large number of artists, performers and IT workers moved here. These people radically transformed the area, turning an industrial poor area into a hipster place with a bunch of interesting shops and cafes, and the streets were decorated with beautiful graffiti and art objects. There is also a type of gentrification called gaterification. This is when neglected areas become respectable gay neighborhoods. Examples include the Gay Village of Montreal or The Castro in San Francisco.

In the CIS countries, gentrification takes a different format. There, this process manifests itself in the form of improvement of former factories and industrial zones. For example, New Holland in St. Petersburg or Winzavod in Moscow.

We now live in an area that is completely populated by people from Caribbean countries - Jamaica, Cuba, Venezuela, Haiti. When we walk the streets of our area, we hardly see people from outside the Caribbean.
