The US Census Bureau has released interim data on national population changes for 2020-2022. In 2022, the population grew by 0,4% or 1,2 million, reaching 333,2 million people. The main driver was migration from other countries: due to migrants, the population increased by one million people in 2022 - an increase of 168% compared to 2021. Natural population growth (birth rate minus death rate) amounted to 245 thousand.

The fastest growing region was the south of the country, where growth was 1,1% or 1,37 million due to internal (876 thousand) and external (414 thousand) migration. In the west, the population increased by 153 thousand with negative internal migration (minus 233 thousand) and positive natural growth (154 thousand). In the Northeast and Midwest, the population decreased by 218 thousand and 49 thousand due to internal migration. If we look at individual states, in absolute terms, Texas has grown the most (470 thousand - 230 thousand internal migration, 118 thousand external and 118 thousand natural growth) and Florida (416 thousand and 444 thousand internal migration). The population of New York decreased the most (180 thousand with external migration minus 299 thousand). In terms of relative population growth rates, Idaho (4,9%), Montana (3,3%) and Florida (3%) are ahead, and New York (minus 2,1%) and Illinois (minus 1,6%) are at the bottom of the list. ) and Louisiana (minus 1,3%). In 24 states there is negative natural growth, the largest difference between birth rates and deaths is in Florida (minus 40 thousand), Ohio (minus 19,5 thousand) and Pennsylvania (minus 23 thousand). In 26 states the trend is the opposite, with Texas (118 thousand), California (106 thousand) and New York (35 thousand) leading the way. Migration from other countries has increased in all 50 states, with California (125 thousand), Florida (125 thousand) and Texas (118 thousand) leading the way. In terms of internal migration between states, the main beneficiaries were Florida (318 thousand), Texas (230 thousand) and North Carolina (99 thousand). The biggest losses from moving to other states were in California (minus 343 thousand), New York (minus 299 thousand) and Illinois (minus 141 thousand).
