Lawmakers propose not detaining LGBTQ illegal immigrants at US border

A group of Democratic congressmen from the Senate and House of Representatives introduced a bill that would classify LGBTQ people as a "vulnerable" group, which also includes pregnant women, crime victims and people under 21 or over 60. Thus, LGBTQ immigrants will be able to completely avoid arrest if they cross the US border illegally.

Lawmakers say the new measure will relieve pressure on the immigration system. The draft law specifies that foreigners who fear persecution and have “limited English proficiency,” survivors of “severe trauma, torture or gender-based violence,” and people with physical and mental illnesses may also be considered “vulnerable persons.”
