Why do Americans notify the tax authorities when moving?

When you move, it is important to inform the IRS, the American tax service. This is important so that you do not miss any notices or requests from the IRS that may require you to respond within the required time frame. Notifying the IRS of your new address is easy. Here are some ways:

1.Use Form 8822

The IRS provides a special form called "Change of Address" - Form 8822. If you and your spouse are moving and filing a joint return, you must each fill out and sign Form 8822. If your move is due to a divorce, both you and your spouse must file a joint return. spouse previously filed a joint return, but now you have separate residences, each of you must notify the IRS of your new address.

2.After completing the form, submit it to the IRS. Check IRS.gov to find out where to send Form 8822 based on your previous address. If you are unable to print Form 8822, you can send a letter that includes the following information: old and new addresses, Social Security number or ITIN, and your signature. Make sure your information is clear and complete so the IRS can update its records with your new address.

You can call the IRS to update your address. The main support number is (800) 829 - 1040. This number is available in the continental United States from 7:00 am to 19:00 pm local time. When you call, you will need to provide the following information to the IRS representative:

  • full name;

  • old and new addresses;

  • Date of Birth;

  • Social Security Number or ITIN.

The IRS representative may also request additional information to verify your identity, as listed on the IRS Phone Numbers page. The IRS.gov FAQ page for disaster victims has information about multiple moves. Please note that the IRS takes time to process your change of address request. Therefore, it is important to notify the IRS of your updated address as soon as possible. Be sure to also notify your tax professional if you use their services.
