New York is made of scaffolding

Walking around the city, it is impossible not to notice that bright shop windows, luxurious front entrances and even the poorest houses are hidden behind a pile of scaffolding. It doesn't look very good. There are, of course, graceful and beautiful ones, but most of them are gray metal beams with a green roof. The total length of sidewalk forests is 450 km, facing more than 8000 buildings. Why are they needed? In 1980, a piece of falling terracotta landed on a pedestrian from a building, resulting in his death. Since then, building owners have sought to protect both themselves from litigation and passersby from injury or worse in an accident. If their building were to fall, it would land on the green metal roof, not on people's heads.
