Fires threaten New York due to dry weather

New York officials are warning residents that warm, dry weather could spark wildfires.

“Dry air combined with increasing northwest winds are creating conditions favorable for fire spread,” the New York City Emergency Management Agency said.

In New Jersey, the Reliable Paper Recycling facility in Jersey City caught fire on April 11. Strong winds and dry air contributed to the rapid spread of the fire. Firefighters are still putting out the fire. There were no reports of injuries. More than a thousand hectares of land burned in a forest fire in Manchester Township (Ocean County). The fire forced a mandatory evacuation of several streets in Lakehurst. In Teaneck, a firefighter was injured by smoke while battling a fire near Teaneck Road and De Grau Avenue. Authorities also extinguished a fire in Howell Township (Fort Plains Road).
