In New York they are going to open points for “safe drug use”

At these points, people with addictions will be able to bring their drugs and inject them under the supervision of specialists. The authors of the initiative believe that this will reduce the number of overdoses, says New York Mayor Eric Adams. By 2015, 5 such centers should be opened in the city. There were 2668 drug overdoses reported in New York last month. The most common cause of death is fentanyl.

However, even among Democrats, not everyone supports the idea of the New York City Hall: skeptics believe that it is necessary to open centers for rehabilitation, and not for taking drugs - this will only worsen the situation. If the mayor's program is approved, it will be funded exclusively from the city budget, since drug use is still illegal at the state and federal levels.

I will add that the problem with opioid addiction is not as clear-cut as it seems. It is not uncommon for accident victims to become dependent on opiates when people are prescribed painkillers to which they develop an addiction.
