“Christopher Columbus killer”: New York police are looking for vandals

A man and a woman came to the Christopher Columbus monument the night before and sprayed offensive graffiti on the monument. On the monument they wrote “Murderer” and “Give us back our land.” The suspects have not yet been apprehended.

Let me remind you that New York has long had an ambivalent attitude towards this attraction. So back in May last year, activist Brittany Ramos demanded the removal of the monument to Christopher Columbus. The monument, by the way, appeared on Columbus Circle in 1892 in honor of the 400th anniversary of the discovery of America. Ramos said Columbus does not belong in New York. Since more and more city residents consider the navigator to be a “controversial figure.” And as an argument, the activist said that “his discovery of America led to the extermination of the indigenous people and the flourishing of the slave trade.”

There were already attempts to dismantle the Columbus statue in 2017. But then Mayor Bill De Blasio managed to calm the group of activists. Still, it is unlikely that anyone will decide to demolish the monument to the Spanish navigator of Italian origin. At a minimum, immigrants from Italy (there is a very large community in New York) will definitely take to the streets in protest and go on strike.
