New York authorities pay $8 thousand a month for a hotel room for an immigrant

This is exactly how much, according to experts, the authorities of New York spend on average on paying for hotels in which immigrants brought from the Mexican border are now accommodated. However, there are still difficulties in serving asylum seekers. They say the hotels that have been turned into shelters are not providing them with any information about what to do next. The entire procedure for applying for asylum, obtaining a work permit, health insurance and benefits is most often told to them by other immigrants and volunteers, and not by the authorities, who theoretically should be involved in this.

On March 7, City Comptroller Brad Lander released a report saying the city's spending on immigrant support services is minimal. More than $9 million a year, which is 0,2% of the total amount that the city plans to spend on solving immigration issues. The lion's share of expenses comes from paying for hotels. Experts estimate that each room could cost nearly $8 a month, and the price does not include meals.

The use of hotels as shelters has already been criticized, but the city authorities cannot yet offer another option for immigrants to live in New York.
