Fox News must pay a record $787.5 million to voting machine maker Dominion
Many Americans today watched the court case called Dominion v. Fox News. For those who don’t know, I’ll explain: the manufacturer of voting machines, Dominion, filed a lawsuit against the Fox News channel. The plaintiff accused the defendant of spreading lies about fraud in the 2020 presidential election - Dominion employees demanded to pay them $1.6 billion in damages. But today the parties entered into a settlement agreement. And as a result, Fox News must pay a record $787.5 million.
Compensation for the media market is truly record-breaking. Before that, the largest amount was $177 million paid by ABC to a South Dakota meatpacking company for a story about the quality of their ground meat.
In the current deal, lawyers for voting machine maker Dominion will receive $262 million. In principle, lawyers say, this is a standard scheme where lawyers are paid a third of the fee of the total compensation.
