In Hebron, New York, a man killed a 20-year-old girl while defending private property.

Kaylin Gillis was traveling with friends across New York State. By car, the company passed through the small town of Hebron - about 4 hours drive from New York. On April 15, she and her friends made the wrong address and pulled into the driveway of 65-year-old Kevin Monahan's house. The owner of the house, seeing the car parking, went out onto the porch and shot the girl twice. Friends were not immediately able to call 911, as communications in this area are intermittent. As a result, the girl died on the spot from the gunshot wounds she received. Police detained a man and charged him with manslaughter.

A similar case occurred in Missouri, but there, unlike New York, there is a stand-your-ground law. Such laws allow the owner of the house, in case of danger, to shoot first and ask questions later. Apparently, a resident of Kansas City took advantage of this law. According to the police, 16-year-old black Ralph Yarl had the wrong address when he came to pick up his two younger brothers from his guests. After the teenager rang the doorbell, the owner of the house, 84-year-old Andrew Lester, shot the teenager twice through the glass window in the door. The victim was wounded in the head and arm. He is in the hospital. The shooter was initially released without charges, but after protests, prosecutors decided to file two felony charges. The question of whether there were signs of a hate crime in the actions of the shooter is being resolved (in particular, this is possible if the cause of the actions was racial hatred.
