Five Tennessee police officers charged with involuntary manslaughter

Authorities in Memphis, where 29-year-old Tyree Nichols died after being detained, are preparing for possible unrest.

On January 7, a police patrol tried to stop a man for dangerous driving. He refused to comply with the police's demands, which led to a chase and subsequent arrest. Further, as stated in a statement by the Nichols family's lawyers, the detainee "was beaten beyond recognition." He was taken to hospital in critical condition, where he died on January 10.

Five police officers were fired. And then they were charged with second-degree murder, assault and aggravated kidnapping, as well as abuse of power and abuse of power. Video footage of Tyree Nichols' arrest is expected to surface today.

Tennessee authorities do not rule out that riots could spread not only in Memphis, as was the case after the police killing of George Floyd in May 2020.
