Access-A-Ride: public transportation for the disabled
Surely those who live in New York have seen cars of different sizes with the words Access-A-Ride. This is a special service that belongs to the MTA (city transportation authority), which transports people with disabilities from point A to point B. It was created due to the fact that some categories of citizens cannot use regular public transport. A person who wants to use this service must first make an appointment with the MTA, at which they must submit an application and documents showing their medical condition. Once your application is approved, you will be given a special travel card that can be used to pay for travel. In order to call a car, you need to go to the website and book a trip - this is similar to calling a taxi. Payment is made upon boarding through the same card, and what is most surprising is that the fares are the same as on regular New York City transport, namely $2.75 per trip. Accompanying persons travel free of charge. By the way, several people can travel in one car if they are on the same route.
It is very important to build an accessible environment for people with limited mobility. Nowhere have I seen so many disabled people on the streets as in New York. At first I was surprised, but then I realized that people with disabilities are everywhere. It’s just that in Russia it is impossible for a disabled person to move around the city independently - this is along with the impossible. I remember St. Petersburg winters, when even a healthy person finds it difficult to move around the city due to uncleaned snow and meters of ice. And in New York, I often see disabled people running errands in their electric wheelchairs.
