The new rules will allow teenagers who want to change their gender to legally run away from their parents, and various shelters and hospitals will have the right not to inform family or police about their whereabouts. The legislation's sponsors, the Democratic majority in the state Senate, say it will protect trans youth from parental violence. If a teenager wants to undergo hormonal therapy or undergo gender reassignment surgery, he has the right to do this without parental approval.
The same applies to abortions - now underage girls can terminate a pregnancy without asking permission from their parents.
Opponents of the bill are horrified by the possible innovations: they argue that it completely undermines parental rights. In addition, adolescents can manipulate their behavior and run away from home, even if they have not been subjected to “violence.”
