A man served 33 years in prison for a crime he did not commit.

55-year-old Daniel Saldana from California was found not guilty of a crime he allegedly committed in 1990. He was one of three men charged with attempted murder for shooting at a car carrying six schoolchildren. Daniel was sentenced to 45 years in prison, but the case was reopened in 2017. One of the defendants said that the man was not involved in the shooting near the school at all. Only six years later was Daniel finally released. This delay is due to the negligence of the former deputy prosecutor, who did not notify the man and his lawyer about the confession of another defendant.

District Attorney George Gascón said, “I know this will not bring back the decades you spent in prison. But I hope our apology will bring you some small comfort as you begin your new life.”
