Free Medi-Cal Covers Eye Care Visits

Since my husband and I have, to put it mildly, not the best eyesight and wear glasses and contact lenses, when we found out that our free Medi-Cal insurance covers visits to an ophthalmologist, we were very happy. We decided to go to the eye doctor because we wanted get a prescription for lenses because, as it turned out, they are not so easy to buy without a prescription + with a prescription they are usually cheaper. Of course, there are sites where you can buy without a prescription, for example: www.lenspure.com. We have a therapist, but through him we were unable to make an appointment with an ophthalmologist; at our clinic we were told that this was separate and that we had to make an appointment through the insurance company. And then I remembered that at the end of 2022 we received books from Medi-Cal, which contained information that we have the right to visit an ophthalmologist for free. You can find a doctor who accepts Medi-Cal online on the VSP website, but you still have to call the clinic to make an appointment. They came in the morning, filled out the forms as usual, carried out an examination on two machines, and after a 15-minute wait a doctor called, who also checked his vision using changing lenses and a screen with letters. Of course, I was upset, and I don’t even know what’s more: either because my eyesight has fallen again, or because the glasses I wear will cost at least $600.

By the way, our insurance covers the cheapest lenses, which means the thickest they can be. But for me, with the required diopters for glasses being almost -8, such lenses are completely unsuitable. Also, insurance covers the cheapest plastic frames, which is also not suitable for me, at least because such expensive lenses require a strong, reliable frame, which costs more. The initial goal - to get a prescription for lenses was not achieved, because our insurance does not cover it, you can only get a prescription for glasses, and for lenses you already pay about $ 150 per person for the selection.
